Put It Away Ready: The Winterization List That Saves Your Spring
Published:

Machines don't break in storage. They break in March, from what storage did to them. An afternoon in November decides whether spring starts with work or with a jump box, a parts order, and a mouse-chewed harness.
The list
- Fuel. Full tank to stop condensation, stabilizer or winter treatment run through the system so it reaches the carb or injectors, and a fresh fuel filter so spring doesn't start with last year's water and sediment.
- Fluids. Change oil BEFORE storage, not after. Used oil holds acids and moisture that sit on bearings and cylinder walls all winter. Check that coolant protection actually matches the coldest night of a Missouri January, not the average one.
- Battery. On a maintainer, or at least fully charged and disconnected. A battery left half-charged in November freezes easier, sulfates faster, and is a dead battery in March. Full charge and a disconnect costs nothing.
- Grease. Every point, until fresh grease shows. Grease pushes water out of joints; winter pushes it in. The zerks you skip are the pins that seize.
- Tires and cylinders. Proper pressure so tires don't flat-spot, and cylinders retracted where possible so the rods spend winter behind their seals instead of out in the weather growing pits.
- Rodents. Cab filters, wiring runs, and exhaust openings. A six-dollar bag of traps and a walk-around in January beat a wiring harness, every time, by hundreds of dollars.
SHOP NOTE
Do the walkthrough with a notepad the same day you park it. Every drip, wobble, and worn part you write down in November becomes a cheap winter shop job. The same list discovered in April becomes a line of machines waiting on parts at the exact moment you need them running.
Or hand us the list
This whole page is one preventative maintenance visit. We come to your yard, run each machine through it, and you get dated records showing it was done, which matters at trade-in time too. Details on the preventative maintenance page, or call 660-280-3880 and get on the fall schedule before it fills.
